Client Challenge
A client had noted that they were unable to fully utilise the productive capability of their loading fleet.
Assigning more trucks to a digger only led to marginal increase in throughput, even though neither the digger nor the crusher were operating at their respective limits. Clearly, there was a constraint somewhere in the hauling cycle.
Key question to be answered – “Would a ‘smart’ traffic manager reduce truck congestion and increase fleet productivity?”
The Solution
BSC developed a simulation model of the loading and hauling activities at two operations – one with manned haul trucks, the other with autonomous haul trucks.
- This model quantified the impact of congestion on the productivity of the operations, and then was used to derive and test realistic digital traffic management scenarios.
- Truck stops en-route, either at stop intersections or due to proximity to other vehicles, was determined to have the greatest impact on productivity.
Solution Value
- The digital traffic management scenarios BSC developed and tested showed that between a 12% to 14% increase in loading and hauling throughput was possible at both operations.
- This increase in efficiency translates to a potential uplift in excess of 10 million tonnes of product per annum – equivalent to US$973 Million in revenue.
