Green Haulage Transition
Client Challenge
A large multi-national mining giant wishes to transition into green open-pit mining.
The proposed green trucks will need to be augmented with additional initiatives to overcome operational challenges
Key questions to be answered – “How will the new truck designs impact the current performance on site? Which supporting initiatives will maximise production and minimize costs?”
The Solution
BSC leveraged Discrete Event Simulation (MineSim) of the loading and hauling activities at an open-pit Platinum operation.
- A "business as usual" simulation of the current setup was used as a benchmark.
- The trucks were then replaced with the proposed green truck design and performance was evaluated against the benchmark.
- The impact on production and energy consumption from the various supporting initiatives were evaluated.
Solution Value
- Through identifying specific performance gaps with the proposed truck design it was possible isolate surge loading as the most promising supporting initiative.
- The simulation indicated that the improvement gained from surge loading was greater than the sum of its parts – traditional equation-based models missed this insight.
- Surge loading can decrease the proposed truck fleet by up to 30%.
