Client Challenge
A colliery was seeking cost reduction opportunities to increase value.
One of the largest costs within the operation, hauling, was targeted for cost saving opportunities.
Key question to be answered – “Where are the critical performance gaps and opportunities to maximise production and minimise costs?”
The Solution
- BSC leveraged its Performance Diagnostic technology, together with a Discrete Event Simulation (MineSim) of the loading and hauling activities at the colliery, to answer this question.
- Two haul routes were investigated, with the number of active haul trucks, truck speeds, and truck fill factors varied for each simulation run, which was used as a benchmark and compared this to actuals to identify variances.
- Under-performance in key KPIs together with their quantifiable impact on profitability was identified and reviewed on a shift by shift basis.
Solution Value
- Through identifying specific performance gaps in shifts, trucks and personal, it would be possible for the mine to haul the material required using fewer trucks.
- This led to an overall 21% cost saving for the hauling activity, which could be maintained sustainably using the Story Chart solution.
