The client operates a bulk cargo port serving their mine, handling the dispatch of concentrate and receipt of supplies and equipment.
Major structural changes were implemented, which handled about 80 vessels and 12k containers pa.
The goal is to reduce running costs while improving operational performance. To achieve this, they require a clear understanding of operational risks arising from changes in workforce structure.
Ultimately, the client needs to determine the optimal workforce configuration for the bulk cargo port.
The Solution
- BSC developed a dynamic simulation model of the port operations, focusing on the utilisation of the workforce.
- The simulation provided an accurate, stochastic forecast of operations at the port with the proposed workforce configuration changes.
- The solution also helped to identify what the maximum sustainable performance was of the existing supply chain in addition to how well the operation would be able to cope with surges in vessel arrivals.
Solution Value
- The analysis showed the current work-force to be capable of processing 26% more containers if required, and that reducing task times of specific equipment by 20% will allow the port to deliver the same performance with an 11% reduction of the workforce.
